Tommy T. Douglas: Bridging Lived Experience with Clinical Health Literacy

As an Independent Health Researcher and dedicated patient advocate, Tommy T. Douglas specializes in translating complex clinical data into actionable health literacy for seniors. Following a major cardiovascular event in 2008, Tommy shifted his focus to the rigorous study of vascular protection and metabolic health. Today, he manages a complex profile including Type 2 Diabetes and Liver Cirrhosis, using his personal journey as a lens to synthesize high-level research from institutions like the NIH, AASLD, and the American Diabetes Association into practical strategies for chronic disease management.

Tommy’s mission through Aging Health is to move patients from a state of fear to one of informed advocacy. By cross-referencing global clinical guidelines with the daily realities of managing portal hypertension, inflammation, and glycemic control, he provides a roadmap for "Clinical Health Literacy." His methodology is rooted in transparency and evidence-based synthesis, designed to empower his peers to have more productive, data-driven conversations with their healthcare providers.

My Journey: From Patient to Researcher

  • 2008 Cardiovascular Event: After surviving a major heart attack, I shifted my focus to the study of vascular protection and long-term recovery.
  • Advanced Liver Research: I specialize in the study of Liver Cirrhosis, focusing on stabilizing portal hypertension and understanding the mechanics of decompensation. I manage this condition personally, which gives me a unique perspective on the daily realities of liver health.
  • Metabolic Management: I actively manage Type 2 Diabetes using a clinical regimen of Metformin and GLP‑1 therapy, combined with low-glycemic nutritional strategies.
  • Autoimmune Literacy: I navigate the systemic challenges of Psoriasis, researching the links between chronic inflammation and vascular health.

My Research Methodology

I do not provide medical advice; rather, I provide Health Literacy. Every article in this library is developed by:

  • Synthesizing clinical data from NIH, AASLD, and the American Diabetes Association.
  • Cross-referencing guidelines with the practical realities of daily disease management.
  • Referencing established medical institutions to ensure accuracy and currency.

Transparency Note: I believe in the free sharing of information without a paywall. By sharing my personal successes and research findings, I aim to help my peers have more productive, data-driven conversations with their healthcare providers.

🔬 Research Highlights & Clinical Influences

The following peer-reviewed guidelines and clinical trials form the backbone of the Aging Health research model.

1. Advanced Hepatology & Cirrhosis Stabilization

  • The AASLD Practice Guidelines: My approach to managing portal hypertension and preventing decompensation is rooted in the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) clinical practice updates. Specifically, I focus on the "Baveno VII" criteria for personalized care in portal hypertension.

  • The Goal: Moving from reactive treatment to proactive stabilization of liver function.

2. Metabolic Excellence (Type 2 Diabetes)

  • ADA Standards of Care: I synthesize the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care in Diabetes to manage my own T2D. My research focuses on the synergistic effects of Metformin and GLP-1 receptor agonists in reducing cardiovascular risk and improving metabolic flexibility.

  • The Goal: Utilizing low-glycemic nutritional strategies to achieve "time-in-range" stability.

3. Vascular Protection & Inflammation

  • The Inflammatory Link: Following my 2008 cardiovascular event, my research pivoted to the "Systemic Inflammation" model. I study the cross-talk between Psoriasis (autoimmune inflammation) and Vascular Health, referencing the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) on how chronic skin inflammation increases arterial risk.

  • The Goal: Reducing systemic "inflammaging" to protect the heart and kidneys.

4. Patient Autonomy & Health Literacy

  • Health Literacy Studies: I follow the National Academy of Medicine’s frameworks on health literacy. My methodology focuses on "Decisional Conflict"—reducing the stress patients feel when faced with complex medical choices.
